10 Lash Hacks for Longer, Fuller Lashes

Ninety percent of women claim that if they could only wear one make-up product for the rest of their life, it would be mascara.
Okay, so I made that statistic up but can we all agree that we LOVE luscious lashes?  From at home glue-ons, professional temporary extensions, and lash growth serums , the eyelash industry is growing every year.  Personally, I have some of the shortest lashes I’ve ever seen and because they’re so curly, they look even shorter than they actually are.  Here are my tricks for perfect lashes without breaking the bank.

 Use  Primer
I love using a white primer before I put on mascara.  Not only does it help me make sure I coat everything (the contrast of the white on the black makes it impossible to miss a spot), but it makes my lashes look thicker and longer even before I slather on the mascara.  It’s a must in any makeup routine.

 Coat Both Sides
Makeup is an artform and so is the application of mascara.  Start at the top of the lash and then switch to the underside.  The difference is unmistakable.

Twist in the Tube
Does anyone else have the natural instinct to pump your mascara wand in the tube? Not only does this increase your risk of bacteria, but it dries out your mascara quicker.  Save some cash (and spare an infection) by twisting your wand in the tube when it’s time to apply.
Wriggle and Roll Your Wand
Rather than starting at the base and going straight up, move your wand side-to-side as you get to the tip.  Even better, wriggle side-to-side and roll the wand as you go.  This way all the mascara on the wand is being used rather than one section.  Don’t be afraid to double (or triple) coat.
Keep Hot Water Handy
I can’t tell you the science behind it but leaving your mascara in a mug of hot water before you apply makes it go on so much smoother than without it.  My favorite is when there’s a baby bottle warmer nearby.  Talk about Hot Lashes (Get it?  Laugh at me, I’m funny!)
Protect the Pretties
I cry a lot more than I’d like to admit so waterproof mascara is a must have in my makeup bag. That is until the end of the day when it’s time to take it off and I find myself questioning all my life choices.  An easy fix is to use regular mascara before using the waterproof.  Your look will still survive the tears but because there’s a layer of protection between you and the water resistant beast, it comes off much smoother when it’s time to wash it down the drain.
Heated Eyelash Curler
If you have lashes like mine, eyelash curlers actually straighten your lashes (and thank goodness because they look so much longer when they are only slightly curled).  If you’re not like me, you should invest in one to bring more oomph to your eyes anyway.  A heated eyelash curler works faster and last longer than a standard one.  Not in the budget for a heated one right now?  Grab your hairdryer and heat yours up!  Just make sure the handles are plastic.  The best order for achieving the fullest lashes is primer, mascara, curler, mascara again.
A more recent trend in eyelashes is tightlining.  Rather than lining the top or bottom of your lash line (or both), you line in-between individual lashes.  It takes a tiny brush and the right kind of eyeliner (I like gel), but it doesn’t take nearly as long as you’d think.  Plus, the results look incredibly natural.

How many times has your face been perfect until you applied mascara and accidentally got black lines around your pretty peepers?  CreaLash has saved me so many times.  You put it behind the lash you’re coating and it keeps you from messing up everything around it.  Sunshine and Lace is all about women supporting women so this company is even closer to our hearts.  Founder Mai Lieu has a patent on the CreaLash so make sure you stay away from knockoffs. They’re illegal.  Bonus:  It works with eyeshadow too.

Choose the Right Mascara
Do your research on what works for you.  Decide what you want your lashes to do for you and head to your nearest makeup store to try out how different wands react to different lashes.  Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t a one size fits all ordeal (no matter how much the makeup companies try to convince you it is).  We all have different textures to our lashes and what works for me isn’t necessarily going to give you what you need in a mascara.
But in case you were wondering, I love Lancôme Hypnôse Drama .

Alexandra is planted in New York City which she considers to be the greatest city in the world (Paris is a close second). She had moved over thirty times by the age of twelve and has since lost count. This brought on an insane case of wanderlust for which she hopes to never find a cure.  Growing up, she was a huge Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen fan which led her to find a love for fashion as they grew to be designers.  She considers Audrey Hepburn to be the best dressed person of all time and often looks through pictures of her when she can't decide what to wear. She has an avid fear of getting wrinkles and avoids things that bring them like the plague.

She absolutely hates to be alone and finds any excuse to plan parties, cook for friends, or even herd children. You will often find her watching Annie (2014), crafting, convincing people to hold her hand, wearing dark lipstick, asking someone what their favorite thing about life is, or sitting with half a watermelon in her lap with a spoon. She loves to win (even in noncompetitive situations), Christmas, tea parties, and to serve people in any way she can.
