Shifting into Summer

Summer is officially here! The official (astronomical) start was Wednesday, June 21st at 12:24 am- the Summer Soltice. I’m a meteorologist, so my natural instinct wants to tell you the science behind the Summer Solstice. So what is it? The Summer Solstice is when the sun reaches its northernmost position – from Earth’s view. At this moment it is directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer. Starting June 22nd it will begin to move South again. FUN FACT: Contrary to popular belief, the sun is farthest from Earth during the Summer season. The distance between the Earth and the Sun pretty much has nothing to do with the seasons. However, during Summer, the Northern Hemisphere is facing the sun (it’s all about the tilt ladies) therefore increasing the HEAT.

When extreme heat brings its worst this summer, bring your best! Shift dresses are where it’s at. They are simple, flattering, and cool. The shape of a shift dress keeps the fabric from clinging to your body – allowing for more evaporative cooling (I just couldn’t help throwing in another meteorological term). Here are some of my favorite shift dresses to get you ready for Summer!

Erin Clanahan

J Crew
Shift Dress in Morning Floral
On Sale $59.99

I love the 60s vibe this dress has- it is so cute. The pattern is bright and bold there’s no need to worry about extra accessories. Also, that price? ON POINT.

love the rocker vibes this dress gives off-  and it would look bomb with heeled or flat booties! This is a great dress for a night out dancing.

Palm leaf print is IN right now so you can’t go wrong with this dress this summer. Plus - Mara Hoffman makes her clothing using sustainable, eco-friendly practices which I love! Go Mara!

I want to buy EVERYTHING from Draper James! Because first of all, who isn’t obsessed with Reese Witherspoon and second of all, anything Draper James is adorable. This collection embodies southern sass AND class- two things I love. The sunshine yellow is a perfect color for the season, it’s happy and bright just like summer.

Imagine wearing this with cute little sneaks and some dainty jewelry while running errands around town. You can dress it up or dress it down- sometimes being basic isn’t a bad thing!
